Dred Scott Decision:
~Dred was an enslaved African who claimes that because he lived in a free state, he wasn't a slave anymore
~He sued for his freedom
~after 11 years, the case reached the Supreme Court
~the case gained much attention
~was decided that he was still a slave and said that Scott was property that can't be taken away
~end decision meant Constitution protected slavery
~the south was happy, but the north was furious
Fugitive Slave Act:
~if runaway slaves were found, must return to owners
~if not returned, people would be fined/jailed
~North opposed this
